![]() Your huge snake can squeeze into spaces that a large creature could fit in (a 2x2) to represent the fact that it's not actually a 15x15x15 cube. The rule your DM is looking for is squeezing. This is why your allies can pass through your space. An enemy can't step into the 5-foot square of a medium creature not because that creature is a 5x5x5 cube but because they're keeping others out of it via footwork, pointy weapons, etc. The 3x3 does not represent your physical bulk but rather the space that you extend control over. Has anyone else had similar issues with the giant constrictor snake? How deal with the awkwardness that comes with large and huge bases, especially those which don't quite accurately reflect the true shape of the creating? Are these assumptions correct? Is this how you would play it out? Also, the target would be "constricted" wherever it stands. ![]() RaW I'm assuming that I just need to move the big 3x3 base like normal and I can "constrict" a target as long as it's 5ft away from any of my squares. Though this hasn't been the case yet, it just feels like there are a lot of awkward and unclear rulings. I feel like in the future there will be issues with me having to use an excessive amount of movement just to constrict an enemy, too. This also means that if the target breaks the grapple, it can go to any of the 16 squares surrounding my base. ![]() He ruled that my allies would need to pass an acrobatics/athletics check in order to hit the target with melee attacks. ![]() On top of this, the enemy ends up occupying the center of my base. This makes the snake pretty awkward and impractical in my opinion. So, mechanically, this means in order to actually constrict anything my target would need to have all 8 surrounding squares unoccupied. My DM believes that in order for me to "constrict" a target, I would have to wrap around it and it would essentially occupy the center of my 3x3 space. Last night when I tried to constrict an enemy, my DM ruled that I would be unable to because an ally was next to the enemy and I'd need to be able to wrap around the target and not all squares were available (see bad diagram below). The issue is that he also changed a bit of the mechanics. Thus, my DM has allowed me to move as if it was a 1x9 as long as I end up in a 3x3 coil. To me, it takes from the immersion of being a snake when you're basically a giant square. But for movement in combat this essentially means a snake could not fit through a 5ft or even 10ft gap. Sure, while it's coiled up it would take up a huge base. The issue is that for a snake this doesn't really make sense. I'm having some trouble with the "huge" base size that it uses, though. I play a moon druid and recently unlocked the giant constrictor snake wildshape.
